Bogalusa to Bassfield is available now! https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/yolandaharper/bogalusa-to-bassfield
Available in all of the typical streaming outlets (Amazon, Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, iHeartRadio, GooglePlay, etc.) I received the inspiration to write "Bogalusa to Bassfield" on December 28th--three days after my first Christmas without my dad. I was drawn to visit Bassfield, Mississippi where my dad was born, and while driving home, I began writing this song. "Bogalusa to Bassfield" was inspired by family stories I heard growing up and tidbits of history I've learned about both Bassfield, Mississippi and Bogalusa, Louisiana. The main character in the song is inspired by aspects of the lives of my dad, granddad, great granddad, and a couple of uncles. The song begins in 1950's when it was common to move from small towns like Bassfield to Bogalusa (“The Magic City”) in order to find work at the paper mill (my dad worked there as a teen before leaving to attend college). “Don’t forget where you come from...“
This song is inspired by my home town but it could be many small towns in the south. I wrote this song after looking through some old photo albums and reflecting on memories of the past. Not all "characters" in the song are exactly like they are in real life. Some characters are a combination of several memories and others reflect life, in general, rather than one actual person. But the names of the sports teams are definitely FOR REAL! :-)
I've been performing "New Boston, Texas" at gigs for the past few years and it has become a crowd favorite, so I decided to release it as a single to share more broadly. People from many different small towns, and even some from larger cities who have family in small towns, tell me it sounds like their communities. The smiles on their faces when they hear a line that brings back a memory, or is just something they can relate to, is what it's all about.
"New Boston, Texas" will be included on my album to be released in 2020.
I hope you enjoy it. If you have happy memories of New Boston, Texas or another small town community, do share!
